West Bund Art Centre
The West Bund Art Centre was originally a factory building of the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Plant. In one sense, it has preserved the awe-inspiring grandeur of the original plant by leaving its large space fully intact, highlighting the imprints of time through the combination of old and new. In another, the decision to leave the east and west facade gables unenclosed also means that this old building with an industrial past will open to the city with a new bearing.
How I’m going to compose a track which could represent such a vast area filled with big-scale museums? Initially, I was thinking about record the Impulse Response of several buildings and re-build the atmosphere sonically afterward, through convolutional emulation methods. To my surprise, when it comes to the day of recording, the first location was actually under refurbishment and the whole space was a construction site. However, all the sharp transients of metal parts hitting the ground and drones from engines were beautifully amplified by the whole room. At certain moment that day, I just felt that the whole site might be considered as an art piece, which could never be rebuilt for any exhibition again.
Han Han is the front man of one of China’s most well-known experimental-rock/electronica band “Duck Fight Goose” and also owner of the experimental record label Miniless Recordings. His multi- instrumental approach of making music usually leads the audience into a place where ambient soundscape, heavily synthesised noise and syncopated rhythm find their harmony, yet still fighting with each other sometimes. His side project GOOOOOSE is more like a spiritual cave of him. There are 5 Os and he currently lives in Shanghai.
