The Museum Siam

Museum Siam

The Museum Siam is located in a large neoclassical building which is the former Ministry of Commerce, in an area that is choc-a-block with grand governmental buildings. It was opened as a museum as recently as 2007, with the aim of educating its visitors on national identity.

While the interior provides an impressive overview of Thailand’s cultural history, the museum garden outside it provides an oasis of reflection.

Artist Notes:

The sample you hear throughout is taken from the traditional Thai instrument the ranad-ek, recorded here in 1948. A short sample has been looped and is purposefully offset with the harp. I learnt about the instrument in the exhibition and the lyrics are documenting two figures I saw in the museum, one of the Thai girl dancing in full traditional costume and the other, Thailand's Miss Universe winner in 1964.
