MxLL – Tom Szirtes

Tom Szirtes is a music composer, producer and digital artist based in London.

Tom is best known for his productions under the deep house moniker Shur-i-kan. With a legacy of two studio albums and over fifty releases and remixes for dance music’s most influential record labels including Freerange, Lazy Days, Simple, Anjunadeep and Defected. Tom’s signature fusion of musicality, club friendly beats and emotionality earned him a global audience and an international career as a DJ and selector.

For Musicity x Low Line, Tom created a piece in response to the space of Gibbons Rents.

Here, he shares his insights:

Gibbons Rents feels somewhere between a private and public place. A small alleyway between the back of two buildings that has been converted in a communal garden. When I first visited I felt a sense of intruding - was I supposed to be here? It feels so intimate.

The high walls protect you from the noise and bustle of the surrounding area. It’s a place of small details over grand visages - the mirrored windows, miniature book library, and numerous plants and wildlife here.

My aim with this piece, was not to attempt a historical statement or high-concept musical deconstruction of the space but to create a soundtrack that resonates with the experience of visiting here. A sanctuary, or inner space, to lose yourself from the pressures of the city for a few moments.

Gibbons Rents’ by Tom Szirtes releases June 1 as part of London Festival of Architecture.
