Democracy Monument

The Democracy Monument serves to commemorate the 1932 coup which resulted in Siam’s first constitution and the end of absolute monarchy. As with so many of Bangkok’s significant buildings, it was designed by an Italian - Corrado Feroci.

The monument is the main focal point of the grand European-style Ratchadamnoen Klang boulevard, and its four wings symbolize the Thai armed forces, while golden offering bowls represent the constitution itself. While most of the time, the monument is surrounded by busy traffic, the monument has remained an important site for political uprisings to rally around since it was built in 1932.
